yup.
Then there are platformers and N64-classics with the occassional arcade mixed in...
Most new games just lack quality and depth and athmosphere as well as playability.
These attributes are present, but seldom in balanced. When one is missing or poor, the whole might, often will, fall.
Of course, old games also have the memory of youth with them. Many things were just better when you were a child, especially the first games you ever played.
Though, one huge thing is also missing today: The challenge, the inherent difficulty.
Of course a "too hard game" might not sell or whatever, but I'm talking about the level of "normal" today. It is often just plain ridiculous. The way "easy" was imagined to be 15 years ago.
But today, you still have an "easy-mode" and even beyond that a mode called "casual" which is "easy-easy/very easy". It is probably called casual so "casual players" don't feel ridiculed for playing their expensive games in the least challenging way.
Of course, people want to see a "story" (regarding an RPG or action-adventure), but such casual modes (mass effect is a good example here) just let you ignore all of the game's mechanics by just walking through and being alright.
Oh, damn, wall of text. Sorry D:
PS: I'm sorry for your loss of the N64 :/
